The Fairlawn Mansion, also known as the Tom Jeffris Foundation, is one of America’s Castles. The three-story, four-story home was constructed by Superior’s third mayor Martin Pattison in 1889. Today, the restored Fairlawn reminds visitors of the boomtown days when the city was booming with business. The property has been used as a children’s home for 42 years, and has been listed as one of America’s Top Ten Historic Places.
In 1891, the mining and lumber baron Martin Pattison built the Fairlawn Mansion. It cost $150,000 then and now is worth over $3 million. The mansion still stands as a testament to Pattison’s fortune. The Fairlawn Mansion was a private residence until 1918. In 1912, it was a Children’s Home for nearly two decades. In 1963, the Superior City bought the mansion for $12,500. In the late 1800s, Grace Pattison’s will stated that the Fairlawn was destined for demolition. A loophole in her will enabled civic leaders to save the mansion and make it a museum in the city.
